Ms. H's 2nd Grade Update
May 6, 2022
Dear Families,
This newsletter is long over due! Your students have been very busy working and learning that sometimes it's hard to slow down to tell you what we've been up to! Please continue reading for a full review of our current studies!
Writing
For the next few weeks students will be learning how to write poetry. We started the unit by looking at everyday items-- practicing seeing these items with a poets' eyes. Students have been experimenting with word choice, repetition, line breaks and mood. So far, second graders are loving this unit. Here is the poem we wrote together about how we love to read on our classroom couch.
Couch Reading
by Room 247
The sound of pages flipping,
with the pictures glowing.
The words flying,
landing on the couch.
The couch is so cozy
settle in with a book.
See the lines before your eyes,
and read another book!

Reading
In reading, we are focusing on the visualization strategy. Students who practice visualizing and imagining what they are reading in their mind's eye have increased comprehension. Students have been enjoying listening to several books, (without pictures first) while practicing the skill and comparing their imagination to what the actual illustrations are.

Later in the unit, we will switch gears to learn about money.

Social Studies
Our new Social Studies Unit is on Community History. Supporting questions for this unit are:
- Why did people settle here?
- Why do people move here now?
- How has our community changed over time?
Students are learning about the first indigenous tribes in the x, x, x, x areas. They learn how farming and agriculture has affected this area, as well as logging, and coal mining. They will also reflect on the question why people moved to this area. Next week, your student will be interviewing you about why you chose to settle in this area. Please be on the lookout for some homework next week!
