Leaving Vietnam - Historical look at ODP
SAIGON, HO CHI MINH CITY, VIETNAM - 1990/08/01: The Luong family leave Vietnam. Luong Vo Thi Hon, who had a stroke just weeks before the departure date is helped onto the plane in a wheelchair. They are embarking a plane at Tan Son Nhat International Airport as they leave Vietnam for a new life in the USA. They applied to leave under the Orderly Departure Program (ODP) and they were approved. The program was designed to try and end the flood of boat people leaving Vietnam. Many drowned or died at sea, most ended up in refugee camps in other Asian countries. The program permitted immigration of Vietnamese refugees, mostly to the USA under the auspices of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees.
