One Star General Pak Chan Su. When we asked him why he had so many medals, he answered that he killed a lot of people!..Stupid question!
He's now got a job in the war museum as special guide, it means he can work when he wants!

Those young girls are all orphans, and serve in the North Korean army.
Perfection is required!
The pix should have been better, but it was forbidden to take pix...Do not know why...i do not see any strategic thing on it!
And it was sundown...

All the kids in North Korea are involved in the Pioneers, a Party operated movement. Children enter the organization in elementary school and remain there until adolescence. The children wear the red kerchiefs, and when they are not at school, kids can roam the streets, but they have to remain with friends of their own age and gender.

The Korean Demilitarized Zone is a strip of land running across the Korean Peninsula that serves as a buffer zone between North and South Korea. The DMZ cuts the Korean Peninsula in half, crossing the 38th parallel on an angle, with the west end of the DMZ lying south of the parallel and the east end lying north of it. It is 155 miles (248 km) long and approximately 2.5 miles (4 km) wide, and is the most heavily armed border in the world.
This isolation has created as a byproduct one of the most well-preserved pieces of temperate land in the world!!
The 2 countries have signed armistice but NOT the peace...

In the front: North Korea.
In the back: South Korea.
Only NK soldiers were there on this day. SK and the americans who are on the other side tend to monitor everything with CCTV.
Crossing the border = being shot without warning!

On april 15, birthday of the late Kim Il Sung, Mass dancing on Kim Il Sung Square. More than 100 000 "official" dancers are there, and for 1 hour, they will dance, by couple, sometimes not mixed ones. The audience is invited to join them...So i've dived in the crowd!
The music is performed by a live band, and all the songs are about Kim Il Sung.

"Hurrah to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea !"

Mass dancing on Kim Il Sung Square. So much fun: dancing under the giant portrait of Kim Il Sung.

Mass dancing on Kim Il Sung Square. The audience is invited to join the ball. The music is rather strange, many times it reminds me the bavarian songs, and for the french members "La dance des canards". Really! Perhaps the influence of the former allied DDR?

She's very famous in North Korea, and sang for the show. I shoot her backstage, she was very happy! Me too!
Those singers are like state artists.
They have to go in countriside to sing, in factories etc etc.

Mass dancing on Kim Il Sung Square.
100 000 dancers in lines, having real fun cos many were smiling, laughing, and it was the first i saw so many people happy...but as soon as the lines are broken, an official scold the dancers...Pyongyang North Korea

On April 15, birthday of the late Kim Il Sung, Mass dancing on Kim Il Sung Square. More than 100 000 dancers are standing on the giant square. The audience is invited to join them. The music is performed by a live band.
The show lasts for one hour, then the lights are turned off, and less than 5 minutes the square is empty and everybody goes home in the dark streets of Pyongyang.
It’s a good time for the young people to meet each other, as there are no discotheques or bars in North Korea. Weddings have to be submitted to the Workers party for approval. During the ceremony, the young couple has to swear fidelity and faith to the Great leader. Weddings take place between people from the same castes.

Singers, artists, like the sport champions have a special treatment in North Korea, like before in DDR, Roumania etc.
They have the chance to have a house in Pyongyang and can travel.
Of course, they must play the game: they have to go in factories, in villages to perform for the people.

Mass dancing on Kim Il Sung Square.

One hour after the beginning of the ball, suddenly, the lights were cut on the place, and the 100 000 dancers stop dancing and sit. Then they started to leave to take buses, subway, and in 15 minutes, there was nobody left!

Leaving the place, the Mass dancing on Kim Il Sung Squar is finished. They won't lost their shoes like in the fairy tale, but many will lost their Kim Il Sung badge!

Mass dancing on Kim Il Sung Square. The next big party will take place in september 2008

There is a famous satellite picture on the web showing a map of the korean peninsula by night, with a huge difference beetween north and south. in North Korea, there is no public light, and in the houses, people use very low light. On this picture that i took from my hotel room, you just can see the public lights on the monuments.
As a tourist, it is not possible to walk at night in Pyongyang. You cannot go out from the hotel...

Show at Mangyongdae School children's palace. Amazing. I think it's better to not understand the lyrics of the songs, very patriotic..

Mangyongdae School children's palace

Pohyon monk North Korea

it is not difficult for a tourist to visit the local shops. I saw few, and everytime, i could buy cakes, chocolate (from Japan), biscuits etc. They sell a lot of canned food too.
But no fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, or Coca Cola.

The Ryugyong Hotel in Pyongyang was supposed to be the party’s new propaganda masterpiece. It’s a 330-metre-tall pyramid-shaped building with 3,000 rooms and revolving restaurants. But hasn’t been worked on since 1992, and if it had it would now bee the world’s tallest hotel.
Most of the hotels in Pyongyang have revolving restaurants, but due to the lack of public lights in the city, there's not much to look at during your romantic meal. The other hotels are all in the 5 star category and provide an e-mail access.
You can send an e-mail in exchange for 3 euros, and the contents of the e-mail will be read by an official before being sent...or not. Postcards are censored too.

Every year in Pyongyang takes place the Kimjongilia festival, opened on the occasion of the birthday of Kim Jong Il.
Exhibited in the venue of the festival are more than 25,000 potted Kimjongilias flowers cultivated by the military organs, commissions and ministries of the Cabinet and national institutions and other institutions and industrial establishments, servicepersons and people from all walks of life and school youth and children, says the officials.

There is a band who sings and plays live, to entertain the queue, cos thousands of people come to see the festival...Tourists do not have to queue.

All Pyongyang citizens will queue to see the festival which consists in a 2 storeys buildings full of flowers.
The queue is very impressive, i do not know how long people wait...Even during week end time, they have to queue!
Kimilsungia Pyongyang

During the Kimjongilia festival, it was the first time we could walk and meet north koreans people. Not easy to make contact. This little girl represents well the mistrust towards foreigners...

It would be interesting to see the photo album of a north korean family, they might have a lot of pix like this in many places. Kimilsungia

When the kids celebrate their 1st birthday, the parents put this kind of hat.

It was a festive day on April 15, so all the koreans came out in the parks to have lunch, dance, and drink. Nice atmosphere.

Traffic officer in the streets of Pyongyang. There is very fews cars in North Korea, but at every crossings, there is a female traffic officer who acts as if there were cars everywhere in a very quick choregraphy. On sunday, cars are not allowed in Pyongyang, to prevent from pollution...

Mosaic at the entrance of Chollima Studios in Pyongyang.
North Korea has a big movie production as Kim Jong Il is very involved in.
The studios are huge, with fake japanese village, chinese quarter, english cottage...
On Tv, you can see 2 channels: one is broadcasting movies and live shows, the other is broadcasting old reports with Kim Il Sung welcoming Caucescu, african presidents, communists leaders etc etc...
It is forbidden to have a satellitte dish.

The fresco says..
work hard and fast
let's become like Kim il sung

Little problem with United Artists on the poster!

the "Peace vehicule"

Here is the only ads that you can see in Pyongyang, mixed with the war propaganda against USA! It is rather surprising to see this ad cos who can afford the price of such a car in North Korea?
Cars are built a factory in the north of the country, employing local north koreans, instead of chinese workers, to manage them in korean language. Perhaps the chinese start to cost too much?

This man is a famous professor.
If you have a question about economy, just knock his office door, ask him, he'll search the answer, and will come back to you with the answer. For free.
Perhaps he goes on Yahoo Ask and Answer!
Grand People's Study House in Pyongyang, North Korea

In the Grand People's Study House, at the library.
We were told there is 30 millions books.
So we asked for a french book.
The girl gave us a book called "Guide des stations thermales et climatiques de Roumanie - 1980", a guidebook about the thermal spas in Roumania!

I was not supposed to take pictures! I think you can read it in his eyes...
But even when i took pictures without permission, i had no problem with the guides, no one asked me about deleting a picture.
I was lucky.

Before april 15, day of the former president Kim Il Sung birthday, all the monuments are cleaned, re paint, decorated.
It's a collective task, and everyone is involved.

On April 15, many people were in the parks to celebrate the former president birthday.
It was nice to see some real life, with dances, lunches, and even alcohool.
For once, north koreans looked humans and did not act like the robots they seem to be when you see them walking in black in the streets.

The bad thing in North Korea, when you're a tourist, is that you need to respect a programme. For example, we came across this concert, but as it was not in the program, we didn't have the right to stop...So if you want to shoot, you have 5 seconds, the time your car passes in front..

"Pyongyang is the Heart of Korea"

North Koreans are fond of Karaoke. In every retaurant, you have a TV and you can sing on the patriotic songs. The pictures show missiles, army, parade...

Pyongyang café, North Korea

Songdowon international children's camp in Wonsan.
The whole building has an incredible architecture.
Toilets are special in North Korea: mainly, there is a door, but that you cannot lock..so you have to knock to know if anyone is already inside...
But the funniest ones where in the Children Thetare: the toilets do have a door, but...with in glass, and transparent!
So the man inside feels like beeing in a peep show!
Lot of laugh.
Sorry, french humour.

In North Korea, the father or the mother carries his child like that, even when they are 3 or 4. I haven't seen any stroller. It's the tradition.

We were supposed to visit the catholic church, but the guides prefered the protestant... We arrived around 10, there were 50 believers in the temple, singing and praying. Then after 15 minutes, they invited us to leave the temple.
The temple is very small, compared to the huge official buildings!
North Korea already has a Catholic church, which for many seem to be 'showcases' built for the visits of foreigners since they do not offer regular liturgical service.

The International Friendship Exhibition, home to shrines to the 'Great Leader', Kim Il-sung, and his son Kim Jong-il. 600 rooms contain more than 250 000 gifts from all around the world... From ivory to kitsch fake copies. Samsung also offered a gold mobile phone...which isn’t very useful in North Korea, seeing as there is no mobile network. The funniest gift is a basketball signed by Michael Jordan, apparently given by Madeleine Allbright to Kim Jong Il. The museum has been created in the hill for security reasons. No pictures are allowed to be taken inside.
Our tour guide said with pride that if we stayed for 1 minute in front of each gift, we would need 1 whole year to visit the entire museum.
On the right: a stuffed alligator, a gift from a member of the leadership of the Sandinista National Liberation Front, and minister of the interior of the council of National Reconstruction of the republic of Nicaragua, in 1971.You have to wear protection on your shoes, as you may put some dirt inside…
The museum displays a collection of pictures showing Kim Il Sung alongside other leaders such as Castro, Khadafi, Sihanouk, and many others.

The General Hospital of Koryo Medicine - Pyongyang North Korea

In every village, at the entrance, you can see this kind of posters which shows the rate of the production.
This billboard shows how many seeds have been sown by the villagers groups in celebration of North Korea's 60th birthday of North Korea.
In the countryside, people work in farms, by 300/600 people units.
They have to produce an amount each year, and if they do more, thay can keep a ratio for themselves or resell it to get money and buy things for the village.
They do not earn money, it is the government which gives them back food.
But each family owns a little land to grow vegetables or fruits.
It is incredible to see outside Pyongyang that every inch is cultivated, everywhere.
