180 Miles for $55k: Can the 2023 VinFast VF 8 SUV Break Into America?
We left a VinFast EV customer drive experience in California with more questions than answers.
www.motortrend.com
VF 8's steering is light and overly boosted, with a very slow steering ratio not unlike something you might find in an older Jeep Wrangler. It's not what we'd call engaging, but given the pre-production status of our VF 8 and the brevity of our drive, we'll reserve final judgement of it and the rest of the VinFast's dynamic qualities until we get a more extensive drive of the electric SUV.
We then sought out a representative to chat about pricing, range, and VinFast's unique battery subscription model, but left with more questions than answers. The rep,
from a local dealer, told us that all VF 8s will sport a 90-kWh battery pack and be EPA-rated at 180 miles for the VF 8 City Edition, 292 miles for the VF 8 Eco, and 277 miles for the VF 8 Plus. The latter two figures notably match the VF 8's European WLTP estimates; typically EPA figures are about 20 to 30-percent lower than the optimistic WLTP cycle.
The rep also broke down pricing for us, saying that the VF 8 City Edition would start at $42,200, the VF 8 Eco at $55,000, and VF 8 Plus at $57,000, all without the battery pack.
