On 8th March 2014, AMISOM celebrates the contribution to peacekeeping by female peacekeepers. This gallery showcases some of the UPDF Female tank drivers based in Somalia. Tank gunner, Lance Corporal Nappijja Catherine of the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces. She operates the 100mm gun. She is one of the 6 ladies wo are part of the armoured brigade.


Tank driver, Lance Corporal Mudondo Zabina of the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces, in the drivers section of her tank. Zabina encourages all the young girls out there, even the women, to come join the army bcause she believes that nothing makes your heart feel good like knowing that what you are doing is saving your neighbor’s life.


Tank gunner, Lance Corporal Nappijja Catherine and Corporal Kyomuhendo Ballet of the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces check on the tank engine to ensure that all is well. The ladies are in charge of all aspets of their tanks, from reloading ammunition to ensuring that the engine is running well.


Tank driver, Lance Corporal Mudondo Zabina, tank commander, Corporal Kyomuhendo Ballet and tank gunner Lance Corporal Otuga Maureen of the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces on their tank. The ladies are part of the Armoured Brigade or Tan Crew as they are commonly refered to.


Tank driver, Lance Corporal Mudondo Zabina of the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces, manoeuvres her tank under the watch of her commanding tank officer, Lieutenant colonel Fred Kakaire. Zabina was a tank driver in Gulu befoe she was deployed to Somalia.


Tank driver, Lance Corporal Mudondo Zabina, tank commander, Corporal Kyomuhendo Ballet and tank gunner Lance Corporal Otuga Maureen of the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces on their tank. The ladies are part of the Armoured Brigade or Tank Crew as they are commonly refered to. There are 189 soldiers that comprises of six vetrans and six women.
