While the EU has its hands full sorting out the snowballing migrant crisis, the fate of millions of Ukrainians forced out by the ongoing conflict in Donbass, continues to be ignored by the West, an Austrian magazine wrote on Tuesday.

This is apparently because the hundreds of thousands of migrants from the Middle East and North Africa are heading to Europe, running away from war and persecution in their home countries and also seeking a better life in the affluent West, Marco Meyer wrote in Saturday's issue of Contra Magazin.
At the same time, it looks like no one is paying attention to what is happening in eastern Ukraine, with western media writing about firefights between the Kiev forces and the independence supporters in Donbass, another round of the Minsk negotiations or simply badmouthing Russia, the author emphasized.
“They just couldn’t care less about the millions of civilians forced to abandon their homes in Donetsk and Lugansk and seek refuge in Russia,” Marco Meyer wrote, adding that 50,000 had moved to neighboring Belarus and several thousand have sought refuge in Poland.
Just because most of these people are fleeing to “bad” Russia, they are seen as “third-class” refugees in the West, which prefers to deal with “first-class” migrants from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and Eritrea and “second-class” refugees from the Balkans, Contra Magazin wrote.
“Maybe this is because Ukrainian refugees are less convenient from a political standpoint? Is the life of a child killed by the Ukrainian army in Donbass less important simply because he or she spoke Russian, not Kurdish?” Marco Meyer wondered.
