If you're thinking of picking up one Sony's new AVCHD high-definition camcorders then you'll want to give the VRD-MC5 accessory a peep. The burner features PC-less, one-touch HD-quality dubbing when connected to over USB to your new HDR-SR5, HDR-SR7, HDR-SR8, and HDR-CX7 Handycam. The unit packs a 2.5-inch LCD, Firewire and S-Video inputs, and plenty of memory slots including SDHC/SD, xD, and compact flash in addition to Sony's proprietary formats. It'll even write to those wee 8cm DVDs just like Sony's DVD camcorders. Sorry, no Blu-ray Discs here, and it won't run from battery. Available August 10th for an estimated ¥30,000 or about $247.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a leading mobile phone and telecommunication equipment provider, officially announced the launch of the Samsung G800, world's first 5 megapixel camera phone with 3x optical zoom today. With the debut of the Samsung G800, Samsung proved itself as a market innovator, introducing 'first of its kind' technology.
The Samsung G800 is the answer for customers' needs to have the perfect digital camera and the perfect multimedia mobile combined into one single device. For example, optical zoom is very common in most digital cameras, but the Samsung G800 is the first and only 5 megapixel camera phone to have this capability. Features such as face detection, and Wide Dynamic Range (WDR), which are very up-to-date features even in today's digital cameras, are also equipped in the new G800.
The Samsung G800 helps its owners to capture fragments of their lives vividly and to express themselves beyond words. With the Samsung G800, users can store their lives in perfect detail at every moment. It is the smartest match for digital photo fans who aspire to own the best possible digital camera features on their mobile phone. Boasting 3x optical zoom and Xenon flash to enable close-ups and exceptional photo detail, the G800 also comes with other most up-to-date digital camera features such as panorama shots, multi shots and macro shots.
Not only just taking pictures, the G800 also provides a very easy tool for sharing images and videos. Plus, the Samsung G800 offers professional video editing functions so that people can easily cut, paste, and edit their own films. A mobile blogging feature helps users to upload their favorite User Created Contents (UCC) site very easily. Supporting High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), the photos or videos can be sent to others very quickly.
The G800 has a new camera Graphical User Interface (GUI) which is intuitive and simple to use so that the user experiences the same environment as a digital camera when using the camera function on the phone. An On Screen Display (OSD) shows various camera indicators in a horizontal preview mode.
A sleek camera phone, the G800 looks like a streamlined digital camera on one side and a fashionable mobile phone on the other side. Elegantly equipped with multimedia features, the G800 still has a sophisticated design. It is designed for the two handed grip when taking pictures. The large 2.4" QVGA LCD with a wide display allows users to view the screen like a digital camera. The 3x optical zoom is an inner zoom, where the lens does not extend outside the body of the phone, ensuring a slimmer design.
Geesung Choi, President of Samsung's Telecommunication Network said: "As multi-megapixel camera phone becomes more and more popular, the needs of actual digital camera-like features grow together. Samsung's G800 will satisfy the unmet needs in the camera category with a true digital camera-like design and functionality. The G800 will enable users to capture and share precious moments in their daily lives through the enhanced camera functions in a fast 3G network."
The Samsung G800 will be supported by a major advertising campaign across Europe and will be available in European countries from November.
The gadget: The Eye-Fi. It's an SD memory card that adds Wi-Fi to any camera. Plus the free Eye-Fi service supports automatic uploads to 20 different web photo sites (like Flickr) as well as a computer on your home network.
The verdict: It works flawlessly.
The performance: Like we said, the Eye-Fi works flawlessly. Setup takes roughly five minutes (you program the card through your computer and bundled card reader). From there, you simply snap pics in the range of your router, and chances are, by the time you go back to your computer, the pictures will be viewable. If your router dies, you turn off your camera, or even if you take out the card and put it back in, the photos will upload when you get things sorted out again. It's actually a normal 2GB memory card underneath all of the other functionality and can work as such.
The catch: We figured it must drain more batterybut apparently in-camera SD power standards dictate that this extra consumed power needs to be minimal, to the level of not being noticeable to the end user. Unfortunately, the product doesn't support hotspots.
The price: $100
The verdict Part II: Sure, the Eye-Fi is basically a cradle replacement. But snapping photos and automatically uploading them in real time to share is truly fantastic, especially when the images can be better than one's camera phone. And the entire product experience is built with simplicity. If you can get over the price and are sick of cords, we strongly recommend the purchase. Available now
* Only works with associated access points which have no additional 'login' layer (ie. only home / office access points, not public access points) and this can only be carried out with the Eye-Fi Manager software running on a computer
* Requires a good WiFi signal to work properly, has less range than typical WiFi devices
* Uploads each and every image taken, no ability to select which images are uploaded
* Uploads full size images to web galleries (it would have made more sense for the Eye-Fi Manager to provide the option to resize incoming
* For single images, demos and entertaining transmission times are acceptable, however if you came home with a card full of images (2 GB) it would take three hours to download all images (if the camera battery could last that long)
* Requires that the camera does not power off otherwise obviously transmission is interrupted
* Unknown additional impact on camera battery life
* Performance is made to look pretty poor in comparison to most cheap USB 2.0 card readers which can manage ~10 MB/sec (some fifty times faster than the Eye-Fi card)
* No Compact Flash version (yet)
